Mrs. Nesbitt’s ABC-Wednesday

Round 20-E

My 129th entry – bijdrage

Started-Gestart: 28-08-2014 : 15-G

Hello and good morning, -afternoon, -evening, dear people who all participate is this wonderful photo-meme, which is a joy to me, week after week, after week. I’m always curious to what you come up with!

The challenging letter of this week is E and I chose Euphonium

My most favorite instrument by far is the Euphonium, which I’ve played for several years untill my health no longer permitted it and I had to stop with lots of sadness ofcourse.
After the accordion, a bugle, a trumpet, a s-bas I switched to the Euphonium, which I always wanted.
This instrument has the most beautiful sound of all windinstruments if you ask me.

To introduce you to the specific sound of it…. Watch and hear video beneath:

    Hi Melody,
what an exquisite sound, such a shame you can’t play
    your Euphonilm any longer,
Do you play any other instruments now ?
I used to play the piano and have always sung in choirs but
I can’t do that any longer as iIcan’t stand for more than a few
minutes, then my back goes into spasm, indescribable pain.
Itis so frustrating i used to love singing,,, never ming I’ve still got
my writing and talking to all the lovely people I’ve met through
    Good post,
    Best wishes,
    ABCW team.

      Hi Di

Nice to read you like to hear something like this.

It indeed was not a pleasure, sometimes I still miss it very much.

No I don’t play because my joints don’t allow it anymore.
In my youth I also danced a lot… that stopped when I had an accident on which I broke my back.
I have sung also from very young till febr. 2008. I had to have surgery in my head due to a severe infection and at that time my vocal cords got damaged so I can’t sing anymore but I still know who that feels and how I loved it so I can relate to you in missing that.

Like you I had to discover other things to find joy in, thankfully I succeeded in that 😉 Blogging, photographing, friends and family.

      Thank you, likewise!!

LOVE the sound of it…is it also called a French Horn? Or is it completely different – probably in the same family, though. My sister played French Horn In the school band.

      Me too

No its not….. a euphonium is a long/large vertical handles instrument and a french horn is a round instrument, indeed in the same family but different instruments, each has its specific sound.

  3. Very beautiful Melody, – you must have enjoyed the instrument so much. I am so grateful for the music in my life – piano, organ and lately the Ukulele. My husband and I used to play duets on the piano, and he also played the tuba. I am very lucky to still be able to play and y fingers say ‘thank you’…..

    • Melody says:

      Indeed Hildred, yes I did!!

Me too its a very important part of it as you will agree.

Thankfully you still can and I wish for you that that will never change.

  4. Love the Pearl Fishers duet, beautifully restrained playing. My first thought on hearing the word Euphonium is always the song The Floral Dance just because its chorus rhyme tends to stick in the mind “I thought I could hear the curious tone/ of the cornet, clarinet and big trombone/fiddle, ‘cello, big base drum,/ Bassoon, flute and euphonium/Far away as if in a trance/I heard the sound of the floral dance”

  5. Gattina says:

Well, I learned something new ! I had never heard this word, for me all the things you blow in are trumpets except a flute of course, lol !

  6. Oh, Melody, I feel like you have just given me an incredible gift. Those pieces touched my soul in the way only beautiful music can. I had never heard a euphonium, but now that I have, it makes me wish for more! Those pieces are so beautiful. The second one is familiar to me, but I think by another name, possible a hymn which I can’t think of at the moment.
